Jewellery care

Keep your jewellery away from chemicals

Exposure to chemicals can damage or discolour gold, silver and platinum, and may damage some coloured gems. Even everyday substances like hairspray, lotion, perfume or other cosmetics can contain chemicals that will permanently damage the surface of your pearls and other delicate or porous gems (like turquoise). Always remove your jewellery before putting on lotions and cosmetics, getting into swimming pools or doing strenuous activities such as gardening and workouts.

Keep jewellery away from light and heat

We know the sun can be damaging to our skin, but did you know it can affect your jewellery too? The sun’s harmful rays, in time, can fade or damage some gemstones, such as amethyst, kunzite, topaz and shell cameos. Pearls and other delicate materials, such as ivory, will bleach under extreme exposure to light. Other gems, especially amber, can darken over time when exposed to too much light. Heat can also remove the natural moisture of gems, causing them to crack or discolour. Opals, especially, can turn white or brown, develop tiny cracks, and might lose their play-of-colour.

Clean your jewellery with care

The best way to clean your jewellery is also the simplest way. Use a soft brush and mild dish soap combined with warm water and gently clean your jewellery regularly.

Store your jewellery properly and safely

Never toss your jewellery on top of a drawer or dresser or keep them exposed to sunlight and extreme changes in temperature. Most jewellery come with a box or pouch at purchase, and these can be used for storage as well. Sterling silver, especially, needs to be kept in an anti-tarnish bag or cloth, and never exposed to air except when being worn. Pearls and opals, on the other hand, draw moisture from the air, so storing your opal or pearl jewellery in a dry area, such as a safe deposit box, can sometimes do more harm than good. It is best to look up how to store your individual pieces properly, or follow the instructions given by the retailer at purchase.
